Trude Smith Scholarship
This fund was established by Dr. Allan Smith through a beneficiary designation in 1996. Dr. Smith joined the WSU faculty as an Associate Professor of Anthropology in 1947. He studied and researched in Ryukyus, Japan, Guam, Trust Islands, and Yap. Anne Gertrude “Trude” Smith was first, and foremost, always a nurse. During her lifetime she pursued academic work in Anthology and Library Science. Mrs. Smith joined the WSU Library staff in 1995 and ended her career as the science reference librarian. She retired from WSU in 1972. Throughout her career, her interest in nursing never dimmed. Dr. and Mrs. Smith became associated with the Intercollegiate Center for Nursing Education in 1969, when Dr. Smith was named WSU Academic Vice President. Both Dr. and Mrs. Smith would spend time at the Spokane’s Carnegie Library, home of ICNE. Mrs. Smith became a friend of the nursing faculty, staff, and students. She often reached into her own pocket book to help students in need of a financial boost. It was Dr. Smith’s wish to create a permanent fund in his wife’s name.
